A Curia poll for Family First found:

  • 52% generally support abortion and 29% oppose
  • 65% think society should work to reduce the level of abortions and 17% disagree
  • 86% support registration for abortion providers and premises, 8% opposed
  • 36% were unsure on what time limit should apply for abortions. 50% support 15 weeks or less.
  • 90% oppose abortions based on the sex of the child
  • 49% support women being able to have an abortion because they don’t want to be a mother with 38% opposed
  • 76% support doctors being required to ascertain a women is not under pressure from a third party to have an abortion, with 8% opposed

Curia did polling for ALRANZ on views of legality of abortion in different scenarios.

The net level of support (those saying legal less those saying illegal for each circumstance was:
– Pregnant woman likely to die +72%
– Foetus has no chance of survival +70%
– Pregnant woman likely to be permanently harmed +70%
– Pregnancy is a result of rape +65%
– Pregnancy is a result of birth control failure +31%
– Pregnant mother can’t afford to have another child +27%
– Pregnant woman doesn’t want to be a mother +22%

Morality of New Zealanders

UMR polled 750 NZers from 30 July to 2 August 2009. Findings:

  • The most morally acceptable activities were divorce (81%), sex before marriage (77%), birth outside marriage (71%)
  • Homosexual relations deemed acceptable by 61%, euthanasia by 55%, abortion by 55% and gambling by 52%
  • Least acceptable are human cloning (7%), polygamy (11%), affairs (13%), suicide (20%), animal cloning (27%) and the death penalty (41%)
